Each One Teach One with Marie Triplett Podcast
Education:Self-Improvement
A few episodes ago we had a mother that lost her adult son in a drunk driving collision, this week we sit down with a mother who lost her 11-year-old son to drowning in a low-head dam...both guests said the same thing-
"It was not an "accident".
An accident implies that it was a freak incident but in reality, both guests understand that the loss of their sons was preventable. And just like the first mother I interviewed, this week we sit down with a mother who has become an advocate in preventing any more unnecessary deaths.
Small or low-head dams appear harmless but can be deadly. Research shows more than 440 deaths at such dam sites since the 1950s. BYU researchers say fatalities occur because a strong current pulls objects back toward the dam, pinning them. There are thousands of these small dams throughout the country. Use the link below to see what registered dams may be in your area. Additionally, many dams are unregistered, parents should educate their children about the dangers of dams and not use them as local swimming holes.
