Dr Sheree Bekker from the University of Bath (UK) discusses how assumptions about gender in sport continue to work to the detriment of girls and women, and by extension, everyone. With insightful examples from sport science, sport policy and sport practice, Dr Bekker encourages us to think differently to ensure all participants both are safe, and feel safe. This will involve actively challenging deep-set, often historical ideas about gender, as well as confronting remaining harmful structures and policies in the world of sport. She sees some positive momentum for change, with organisations adopting human rights approaches for their policies, and with young people in particular increasingly unwilling to accept the ways things are.
