Ep 6 - How can diverse representation in books make us better leaders? With Carolynn Bain
In this episode, Sophie and Alice speak to Carolynn Bain, founder of Afrori books in Brighton - home to the biggest selection of books by black authors in the country. Started amidst the protests of 2020, Afrori books has grown to have the biggest selection of books by black authors in the United Kingdom.
Their mission is:
• Support black authors.
• Create diverse bookshelves.
• Be a voice for justice.
In 2022, Afrori Books teamed up with The Feminist Bookshop, to launch the Brighton Book Festival, to celebrate the power of books with our community.The Brighton Book Festival seeks to celebrate and develop the literary and cultural wealth of our region, showcasing the vibrant writing scene in Brighton and Hove and drawing innovative, creative, change-making writers from around the UK.
Carolynn is passionate about the power of stories to change minds and develop empathy for those who are different from us. In this episode, Alice, Sophie and Carolynn discuss how writers can be changemakers, as well as why diversity in books is so important.
