Thirty years ago, talking about mental health—let alone suicide—was almost unheard of. It was whispered about, avoided, or met with uncomfortable silence. If you were struggling, you were told to "toughen up, push through it," or "keep it to yourself." Resources were limited, conversations were rare, and stigma was everywhere.
But things have changed. Slowly, steadily, the walls of silence have started cracking. We’ve seen athletes, musicians, and everyday people share their struggles. We’ve built helplines, support networks, and safe spaces. But are we really talking about it enough? Are we asking the right questions? Are we listening?
Today's guest is a well-known figure in the Grande Prairie community. Tom Pura has been a dedicated member of the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce since September 2008, currently serving as the Communications and Public Relations representative. Before his tenure at the Chamber, Tom worked as the Sports Director at Big Country 93.1 CJXX-FM radio from 1988 to 2008.
Beyond his professional commitments, Tom is a passionate advocate for mental health initiatives, dedicating over 12 years to increasing awareness for the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention and the Men at Risk Program, now known as Tough Enough To Talk About It.
I sat down with Tom as he shared the deeply personal story of losing his father to suicide—an experience that profoundly shaped his mission to change the narrative around mental health. Through his journey, he has turned grief into purpose, challenging the stigma and advocating for open, honest conversations about suicide and mental well-being.
