Drawing on Leonard Woolf's 1928 warning that imperialism would either be "buried peacefully or in blood and ruins", Overy traces the roots of global conflict to the late 19th century, when newly modernising nations – Germany, Italy, Japan – sought to prove their greatness by acquiring colonies. Empire was not just an economic necessity; it was a matter of national honour, a way of asserting membership among the world's great powers.
We explore the ideology that sustained this wave of imperialism: a toxic blend of Social Darwinism, racial hierarchy, and the belief that "superior" nations were destined to dominate "inferior" ones. These ideas – Lebensraum, the civilising mission, the survival of the fittest – were not Nazi inventions. They were mainstream in Britain, France, Germany and the United States long before Hitler came to power.
