On today's podcast episode we are talking about an uncomfortable and essential topic, and that is when your child is being bullied by their teacher.
For the context of this episode, I want to define bullying so that we are all on the same page.
A bully is described in the dictionary as a “blustering, mean, or predatory person who from a perceived position of relative power, intimidates, abuses, harasses, or coerces people. Especially those considered unlikely to defend themselves.”
There you have it, folks. It is implied in this context with the words abuse, harassment, coercion, that there is an intention to do harm.
Very often the “intention to do harm” is a little bit murky when bullying occurs between a teacher and a student because the teacher might be hoping to get a student to fall in line or motivate them to do better with their actions and words.
But if they're insensitive to a student's unique needs, the way a student learns, and a student's differences, their actions can be quite detrimental.
Subtle bullying happens all the time.
