The main reason is it's just 'too depressing', and it 'doesn’t make a difference'. But it's not just the UK, and it’s not just the news. Globally, the average election turnout has fallen from 65% to 55% in 15 years. The thing is, you can’t tune out politics. Because EVERYTHING is politics. How safe you feel walking home at night, the price of a pint, hot summers, trying to book the dentist, the World Cup – all of this involves political choices made by someone, somewhere. This week: why so many people are switching off from politics altogether, who benefits from that, and what it would take to win them back.
