The power goes out for a week and suddenly every “prep” turns into a question: what do we actually need to keep our family safe and functional? We start with the part most people skip, the math. Instead of buying a generator and hoping it works, we list the real critical loads and estimate watts and daily energy use. Phones for communication, LED lighting, a fan for summer heat safety, a cycling refrigerator to protect food, and any medical devices all add up to a realistic target of roughly 1.5 to 3 kilowatt-hours per day for a family of four.
From there, we compare three practical backup power options for power outage preparedness on a realistic budget. First is the simple battery route: quality power banks, LED lanterns, spare AA batteries, battery fans, and a hand-crank or solar NOAA radio, plus a small solar panel for slow daytime top-offs. Second is a portable power station with folding solar panels, what 500 to 1000 watt-hours can really run, and why sun and recharge time matter as much as capacity. Third is the portable inverter generator, including why dual fuel matters, what watt range fits essentials, and how surge watts from refrigerators and other motor-driven gear can trip you up.
We also get concrete about generator safety and fuel storage. Gasoline needs stabilizer, dating, and rotation. Propane stores for the long haul but must be kept upright and handled safely. Most importantly, we lay out a simple “run it in blocks” schedule that can stretch your fuel and keep a fridge cold without burning everything in two days. We even zoom out to winter outages, where heat becomes the real critical load and non-electric solutions often win.
