After three decades of Labrador retrievers taking the lead, the American Kennel Club has tagged the French bulldog the favorite dog breed in the US. So, why is that controversial, especially among veterinarians?
There’s no question that Frenchies can be funny, friendly little dogs — and their short snout is pretty cute. But that flat face can make it tough for these little guys to breathe — especially in warm weather. They’re also prone to spinal issues, skin problems and eye conditions.
Although some French bulldogs can be very fit, a 2018 study showed that nearly 75 percent of them have health problems. And it’s likely that unscrupulous breeding will push that number up.
So, if you’re intent on finding a Frenchie, be sure to research breeders and health testing first — and know that their veterinary care can be quite expensive.
