How...how have you been? Much has happened since we last "spoke." There's been a coup, apparently; you've probably heard about that. I've been up and I've been down; I'm supposed to go back "up" on the advice of my counselor and nurse; maybe this means more posting? We'll have to see. Anyway, here is a program, from a different time and universe.
Perhaps the most surprising inclusion in this night's program is the Vakula tune--and it is a tune. Proficiency! Such a rare thing in my life. So refreshing to hear what sounds like a decent guitar decently played through a decent amp. Personally I am too obsessed with texture to actually get good at playing, so mired am I in the search for the holy grail(s) of "good sound." Steve Albini calls such people "tone lawyers." I confess that I am one. More like "tone support staff," driving to work in a Honda CRV instead of a Benz, but you get the idea. I recall friend of Bombast / former bandmate Mr. D saying to me once, "you always seemed to view the guitar less as an instrument than as something to make noise with." It was true! Now that I know a few technical facts I can amend this to say, "not so much an instrument as a source of voltage."
This night continues an extended flirtation with compilations from "The Blog That Celebrates Itself." I don't know what to tell you--I am a sucker for a) compilation albums b) cover versions and c) free stuff. Oh, and also d) "shoegaze," whatever that is--strangely it does not exhibit much interest in tone-lawyering. Why I find this noteworthy I'm not sure. I probably still carry the sense memory of fearing the suspicion of the program directors at my old station: "you seem only to play stuff from four different labels." I'm not even sure anyone ever said this! (Though it would not have been unfair). Thinking makes the world.
