On this final episode of Career Journeys we welcome Laura Sydell ’83 by phone from San Francisco. Laura is the Digital Cultural Correspondent for NPR and was a Russian Cultural History and Theatre major at the Colleges. She started out as a journalist at WNYC in New York reporting on culture and politics of New York City’s racial communities. When she made the move to NPR, Sydell was not an expert in technology but was able to speak about the complex issues in ways listeners could understand. Quickly she became known for her reporting and interviews with people from Facebook, Google, and Apple. Her writing and reporting have received numerous accolades and awards over the years, and her investigation into patent trolls has been featured on This American Life. Sydell has remained involved in the Colleges as the 2017 Convocation speaker and was awarded the Alumna Achievement Award by the William Smith Alumnae Association. Career Journeys: Josh Horowitz ’98

On this episode of Career Journeys we have Josh Horowitz ’98 on the phone from New York City. Horowitz graduated from HWS with a degree in English before beginning his career in media. He is a current MTV News correspondent and host of the TV show After Hours and the podcast Happy Sad Confused. Since 2006, Josh has been the face and voice of MTV News’ movie coverage on-air and online. Josh is at the forefront of pop-culture and entertainment and is a nearly permeant fixture on the red carpets. Horowitz’s post-graduation support of the Colleges includes participating as a panelist in Career Services’ New York City Behind the Scenes trip. Career Journeys: John Sipher ’83

On this episode of Career Journeys we are joined by John Sipher ’83 P’19 by phone from Washington D.C.  After a 28-year career in the CIA’s National Clandestine Service, John retired in 2014 and has become a sought-after foreign policy and intelligence expert. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and Politico among other publications, and he has appeared on the PBS NewsHour, CNN, NPR, MSNBC, BBC, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Since retiring from the CIA, John has cofounded Spycraft Entertainment, “a production firm providing firm providing content and talent to the entertainment industry.” At Hobart and William Smith, Sipher was a history major and he has continued to maintain ties to the Colleges by speaking to students at the Day on the Hill trip in Washington D.C. Career Journeys: Sara Wroblewski ’13

On this episode of Career Journeys we welcome Sara Wroblewski ’13 by phone from Boston. Sara is the founder and CEO of One Bead, a company she founded while a student at HWS. Sara was a Media & Society and Economics major at the Colleges and was the inaugural winner of The Pitch. One Bead partners with schools and after-school programs to provide unique enrichment programs for elementary-aged students. Sara began the company selling hand-blown glass beads on campus to support an elementary school in Nairobi. The company raised over $40,000 with the support of the Colleges. Now, eight years later, members of the Colleges’ community serve on One Bead’s Board of Directors and the company is proving that anyone can be a catalyst for change. Career Journeys: Lt. Stuart Hillenbrand ’04

On this episode of Career Journeys is Lieutenant Stuart Hillenbrand ’04 by phone from Washington D.C. Stuart is Lieutenant with the Secret Service Special Operations Branch. A Uniformed Division Federal Officer, Stuart provides protection for the President, Vice President, and people designated by the Executive Branch of the United States government for protection. A political science major at the Colleges, he worked with the Geneva Fire Department as well. Stuart has protected the White House, Treasury Building and Annex, the Naval Observatory, and embassies. He has traveled all over the country and the world as part of the President’s advance team. Stuart has maintained his ties to the Colleges by participating in the Career Services Day on the Hill trip to Washington D.C.
