Aaron Miller: The Mentorship of Traditional Bowhunting

This week Aaron Miller joins Alan Altizer to discuss our responsibilities as traditional bowhunters, and how to share the lessons and ethics that a traditional bowhunter learns over their lifetime of experiences. “We have been blessed to have hunted the hard way.” But this path has taught the bowhunter so many things and has provided teaching tools which can be used to mentor the next generations. These tools can be used to teach them how to be better hunters, but more importantly, life lessons which teach them to be better men and women. Too few kids today have guidance and mentorship in the outdoors. Whether it is a person’s own children, or someone else’s, it is our responsibility to share our knowledge and passion for the outdoors. The best part to bowhunting is sharing the knowledge we have with others and seeing their success as we watch the next generations become better than us.

Rosey Roseland: My Friend Paul Schafer

This week Alan Altizer is honored once again to be joined by one of Montana’s legendary traditional bowhunters, Rosey Roseland. Rosey is considered one of the most outstanding Traditional Bowhunters of modern times. His group of trad hunting friends were so successful at killing animals, they were known as “The Wolf Pack”! Among this group was one of his closest friends, Montana legend Paul Schafer. This week Rosey graciously shares a few stories about time spent with Paul. Now in his 70’s, Rosey is living in Alaska and still bowhunting, fishing, and trapping. Additionally, Rosey passes on a few stories of the old days and other friends, and he gives some pointers on setups and bowhunting tips that he has learned from his life as an outdoorsman. Although Schafe has been gone for way too many years, his memories and stories live on through the Rose.

PBS and Compton: Bowhunting's Heavy Hitters

This week Ethan and Terry Receuver join Alan to talk about the Professional Bowhunter Society and Compton Traditional Bowhunters.  These two national organizations are great for both bow hunters, and bow hunting!  Terry and Ethan talk about the similarities of the two organizations and the benefits of being a member of both.  And we discuss how these two groups work together on issues throughout North America affecting bow hunting opportunities. 

Grizzly Hunting with Rick Snell

The excitement of being within Trad range of an animal definitely will make the heart pound. But being within Trad range of a grizzly takes it to a whole other level. It is imperative that the hunter makes no mistakes and stays focused on the job at hand. One small lapse in focus can mean a blown hunt, or death in the jaws of one of the most formative animals a bowhunter could ever dream of hunting. It takes a special hunter to take a grizzly with traditional gear. Rick Snell, “Mr. Grizzly”, has spent much of his life hunting these magnificent animals with his recurve. This week Rick joins Alan Altizer as he shares several grizzly hunts and a couple of black bear stories. Having taken over 20 grizzlies with a recurve, he has some incredible stories. This is an exciting show!!!   

Tracking: The Hard Facts with Bob Foulkrod

“This is one of the most important shows that we have produced!!” This week Alan Altizer and Bob Foulkrod have a hard-core discussion concerning tracking of a wounded animal. “It’s totally a matter of respect to the animal and bowhunting to make every effort to recover the animal.” But tracking is an art and a process that requires a great deal of patience and determination. It is a facet of woodsmanship that requires ongoing practice and experience prior to the hunt. These two friends have tracked hundreds of animals over the years and share their opinions and knowledge that has been refined over nearly sixty years. “To be an ethical outdoorsman and a good bowhunter, you have to be an even better tracker!” This one is a must.
