This is a recoding of the April 2022 PETE Collaborative, a meeting of mostly USA based PETE faculty and graduate students.
Topic: A Deliberate Dialogue about the Role of Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education: Sharing Informed Opinions to Shape Future Discourse
Description: This session provided space for two views on the role of SEL in PE from two recent JOPERD editorials to be shared. This deliberate dialogue was framed around the two editorials; therefore, we encourage the PETE Collaborative attendees to read the short articles before the conversation. The articles can be found here. Hans van der Mars and Jackie Lund will present the first view, who offer the perspective that making SEL a primary learning domain could be problematic. Paul Wright and Kevin Richards will give the second view, who provide the perspective that SEL is an integral part of PE. This deliberate dialogue is designed to share informed opinions and embrace the complexity of issues that face our field. You are invited to come to share your ideas and join the discussion on Thursday, April 14th. We will listen to the two viewpoints, discuss in breakout groups, share insights and perspectives, and foster healthy professional discourse.
