Africa Now November 9, 2016 Thomas Sankara's Pan Africanist Legacy in Today's Movements Topic and Guests: Africa Now! today continues its periodic focus on Pan Africanism. The show features the legacy of Thomas Sankara in today’s movements. Recently scholars and activists dissected what Thomas Sankara means in movements worldwide—from the youth movements on the African continent in Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and South Africa to movements in the United States. The conversation was held at the forum entitled Thomas Sankara Legacy, Democracy in the Global South, and Black Lives presented by Institute for Policy Studies, Friends of the Congo, All-African Revolutionary Party, Socialist Workers Party, ANSWER Coalition, Party for Socialism & Liberation, Revival of Panafricanism Forum, Pan-African Community Action (PACA), DC Metro Coalition in Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution, and All African People’s Revolutionary Party-GC. Ms. Shelley Green of Pan-African Community Action who connects Sankara’s principles with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to community control of its livelihood here in the United States to healthcare for all. Dr. Msia Kibona Clark, Assistant Professor in the Department of African Studies at Howard University highlights Pan Africanism in action, by describing the intersect of Fees Must Fall and Black Lives Matter movements. Some of the themes Dr. Clark focuses on are the connection of feminism and Pan Africanism, and Africanization of studies in the U.S. and South Africa. As mentioned before this was from the forum entitled Thomas Sankara Legacy, Democracy in the Global South, and Black Lives. Ms. Aline Piva of Council on Hemispheric Affairs addresses the impact of Sankara on current movements in Brazil. Ms. Piva also magnifies the ouster of Dilma Rousseff in what is seen as a coup by the parliament; the attack on the progressive movement today in Brazil; and role of Sankara’s principles could play as a motivation force to counter the attack. Ms. Mary-Alice Waters of Socialist Workers Party and Pathfinder Press sharpens the meaning of the legacy of Thomas Sankara in the 21st century and reminds us that democracy is not a classless concept. Ms. Waters further emphasizes that the guiding ideology of Sankara was communism.
