Summary—Topics and Guests: Dissecting the Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa; and Update on the Political Controversy in the DRC. Today AfricaNow! contextualizes the xenophobic or what many say are Afro-phobic attacks in South Africa—focusing on the historical, political and economic factors with Grant Clark, a South African journalist and media consultant, who focuses on social justice issues. Also on AfricaNow! Congolese activist Kambale Musavuli, Spokesperson for the Friends of the Congo provides an update on the political controversy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Topics and Guests: Last month South Africa was shaken by anti-immigrant violence in which 12 people mostly South Africans were reportedly killed. This is not the first time that foreigners in South Africa from other parts of the African continent have been targeted. Xenophobic or what many say are Afro-phobic attacks also occurred in 2008 and 2015, affecting foreign owned shops and lives. Today the show contextualizes these attacks—focusing on the historical, political and economic factors. Joining the show from Johannesburg to dissect the xenophobic attacks in South Africa is Mr. Grant Clark, a South African journalist and media consultant, who focuses on social justice issues.
Following a two-year delay on December 30, 2018 citizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo went to the polls to pick a successor to Joseph Kabila. Observers, civic society organizations and Congolese citizens noted that the voting was marred with irregularities. Nonetheless Felix Tshisekedi of UDPS, the son of late veteran opposition politician Etienne Tshisekedi was declared winner. A number of people including the other main contender Martin Fayulu contested the results and alleged a deal had been struck between Kabila and Tshisekedi. This point resonates following this past August’s appointments of Kabila loyalists to key positions in government by Tshisekedi. Joining the show from Accra to provide an update on the political controversy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is Mr. Kambale Musavuli, Spokesperson for the Friends of the Congo. A native of the DRC, Kambale Musavuli is one of the leading political and cultural Congolese voices, and is a human rights advocate.
