The Chief Executive of the local Authority in Leitrim says it was difficult but necessary decision to increase commercial rates for businesses in the County.
Councillors sanctioned a five% increase at yesterday meeting in Carrick-on-Shannon.
The revenue generated from commercial rates is seen as vital resource in securing matching funding for many development projects such as town regeneration projects.
Speaking to Ocean FM News, Joseph Gilhooly, chief Executive of Leitrim Council says the funding taken in from commercial rates is vital for the County to avail in the Co funding development model.
In relation to yesterday’s decision Mr Gilhooly outlined how it was a difficult decision to take for the local Councillors.
He expressed the hope that the costs will lead to increased visitors to the County and in the process a greater return for many local businesses.
