In episode 141, I speak with Simon Fearon an athlete I’ve been coaching and working with. We reflect on the journey to running his first sub 3 hour marathon at the 2022 London Marathon. And we discuss what’s next.
We talk about the buildup, the race and the aftermath. Whilst there’s some serious parts of the conversation, there’s also some funny moments showing the behind the scenes of a coach and athlete relationship.
In regards to diversity it is important for me to get other diverse people into the sport, so when the opportunity to coach another black runner, who wanted to run a sub 3 hour marathon came about, I had to take it up.
To provide some context, in 2021 I ran the London Marathon in 3:00:06, and understandably I was disappointed. But things happen for a reason. In 2022 I helped Simon run his first sub 3 in 2:57 and I ran my first London sub 3 in 2:58 (Taking into account this was a week after running sub 3 at the Berlin Marathon).
Thank you to Simon for the opportunity to be part of your journey!
