Before the Maddux murder trial began Judge Witt asked one of the attorneys a question in open court, "Don't you realize that everyone, no matter how low and how despicable, has a right to be represented by an attorney?" This question was widely published in newspapers, and sets the tone for the trial that was about to begin. The Madduxes were low and despicable and while they had a right to a trial, it was really a formality to endure before the inevitable prison sentence occurred.
