Bone health is one of the most important topics in medicine. Why? Because bone fractures are one of the leading causes of mortality in older adults. In this episode we speak with Dr. John Neustadt; one of the leading integrative medicine clinicians in the area of bone health and osteoporosis. He has really brought to the forefront researched based nutrients such as Vitamin K2 (MK4), Calcium, Vitamin D , and other diet and lifestyle interventions that are geared toward reducing fracture risk. We discuss bone density testing and the context of the T-score on the Dexa Scan as well as what really matters when it comes to choice of therapies. We speak about risk factors leading toward bone density issues and what we can all do to strive for healthy bones. Bone physiology is a fascinating topic as is a unique coordination of bone production orchestrated by osteoblasts and bone remodeling and re-absorption orchestrated by osteoclasts and for good bone to be made the body needs a coordination between these components. It also has many factors such as hormone, immune, and inflammatory elements. Bone density improvement does not necessarily mean better bones. We go into this and more on this episode.
