The U.S. Civil War is one of the most intriguing, impactful events in not only our nation’s history, but consequently world history. Within these 4 years, one single occurrence could have altered the outcome of the struggle and ultimately the fate of the Union.
In September of 1862, the war was still young and both sides were experiencing moral-lifting victories and crushing defeats. Confederate general Robert E. Lee had the reputation as an accomplished, formidable advisory to the Union forces and was living up to this status. He seized the initiative in the early fall and began advancing north for a possible all-out invasion. It was a pivotal time in the war. If Lee could score a decisive victory, European nations, such as England or France, might recognize the Confederacy, and the war for all intents and purposes – would be over. The South would be a triumphant independent nation and President Abraham Lincoln’s dream of a unified country would be lost.
