HOW THE BRIGADIER LOST HIS EAR by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

The Adventures of Gerard is a compilation of short stories Doyle wrote in 1903 about a fictional French officer named Etienne Gerard, who fought for Napolean, is now retired in Paris, and shares the stories of his exploits with others in a cafe while his friends keep his wine glass filled. In this story Gerard is spending the winter in Italy, which Napoleon has captured, falls in love with an "exquisite" woman, and is captured by vengeful Italians who plan to kill him. Doyle writes in the preface that he borrowed from actual historical works that were rich in detail and plentiful which were written by the actual fighting men themselves.
