San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. People from all demographics came there, and so did this episode's guest: Dr. Victoria Sweet. She intended to visit for just two months yet stayed for twenty years. The hospital gave Sweet the opportunity to learn from extraordinary patients an older idea of medicine that predated her traditional training, one of the body as a garden to be tended, not a machine to be fixed.
