When Janis Joplin died in 1970 at the age of 27, she was at the height of her musical powers and her rock ‘n roll fame. That summer she headlined a cross-country tour of Canada, during which she taught her old compatriots in the Grateful Dead some new tricks. They were tricks she had learned herself over the years: at dead-end gigs in Chicago, in the intimidating halls of Jefferson High, and at the far-out rock shows of Austin’s most-wanted.
