The Vatican, God’s Banker, and the Financial Scandal

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Roberto Calvi, aka “God’s Banker”, ran Banco Ambrosiano, and developed close ties to the Vatican Bank.

Through a web of offshore companies, funds were allegedly channelled into causes aligned with Pope John Paul II, including support for anti-communist movements in Poland, and initiatives in parts of South America.

When Banco Ambrosiano collapsed in 1982, billions were missing, triggering one of the biggest financial scandals in modern European history. Not only that, but the mystery of what happened to “God’s Banker” remains unsolved to this day.
