You should have taken option A. In the movie the Run Down with the Rock at the very beginning he is shaking down a big time quarterback for a gambling debt. He has to take out his whole offensive line in doing so… When he grabs the Quarterback and takes his ring the QB says “what’s with all the hostility? The Rock answers you should have taken option A.
When we are attacked we have two options.
Today we are going to learn about how to keep people from ramping up and attacking us more and more…
Now people will attack you verbally on social media, and sometimes in person, but almost always - never in person.
So what do you do when someone attacks your opinion, your stance your beliefs or your motives?
Well first off lets realize that social media is a breeding ground for so called experts, bullies and the insecure… that being said… it still doesn’t change how we should react.
Proverbs 15:1 says
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Weakness of undeveloped character… Or you lack experience… what does that mean? It means you do not have the understanding from where they are at to appropriately respond - so just respond in love.
Wrath - literally means heat. You will turn down the heat by simply and gently responding in love.
But a harsh word stirs up anger… it will heat it up!
Verse 2
The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.
Proverbs is very specific here in how to deal with the haters in the world.
Understand you don’t know where they are coming from.
Don’t pour gas on it. Simply resend in love.
Then verse 2 A wise man will admire knowledge and even encourage it… while the fool will continue to gush evil.
The word folly used here actually comes from the root word evil.
So let me break this down and simplify it.
You post something on social media.
Someone attacks your post or misrepresent you with their comments reading into what you said.
Your response is first internally…
I am not sure who hurt this person and why they are responding this way.
Verbally or at least in writing a response you admire their opinion and love them. Then when other opinions come into the picture that are wise you encourage that thought…
If others disagree with it they will promote evil by their response.
So practically my life on social media…
I honestly do not post things about me or that I think are inflammatory… In fact I am always surprised at what some people take offense to… thats fine.
Anyway… my goal is to always keep communication open to share Jesus - and yes that is even to some so called Christians or those Christians who do not exemplify Christ.
So here is a real life example: I posted a picture of a permit to carry class we had last year. We do it for one reason and one reason only - we know it will draw in our community and we can give them a free class and then tell them about Jesus. We have in fact had over 124 people come to Christ due to these classes. But this particular picture people blew up over… no masks… no social distancing, etc…
People lost their minds…
Now I could have ranted on a few points… we told everyone it would be a packed event, non covid friendly, wear a mask if you want one etc…
I could have said “this is about rejoicing in those that came to Christ”.
I could have said things like grow up, you nazis… LOL, or whatever.
What did I say? Not a thing.
That was my response in love.
There are times I have posts blow up and I simply tell people ‘hey thanks for your response, I love the exchange of ideas.
Sometimes when it is a regular “Troll” and yes I have those… I will say “I love you Bobby, right on time… you did not disappoint.”
I just refuse to respond in anger- it will not bring them closer to jesus.
I recently had a post and those who responded to it were people I know. I could have said thing about their past that I know and said well you are responding this way because of this in your past…
NOPE not going to do it.
Bottom line is this: My response leads to so many great conversations. I have hundreds of people private message me and ask me things like, how can you stay so calm, how can you not strike back, or they might even be the people who attacked me, but due to my response will PM me and ask me to pray for them or ask me about my thoughts…
Love always wins.
Are you able to love those who hate you?
Its a great goal to achieve! It is Christ embodied.
