Sports Therapy Association Podcast
Health & Fitness
In March on the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast, our weekly focus will be on up & coming CPD (Continuing Professional Development), with the aim of introducing approaches, ideas and techniques that could potentially help you, the soft tissue therapist, manage your learning and growth.
We start off with an episode discussing the two part 'Dermoneuromodulation' (DNM) course coming to the UK, being delivered in both Birmingham and Exeter in March and June (dates down below).
Special guests Mike Grice and Daniel Williams of Movement Therapy Education who have organised the face-to-face UK workshops join us in this episode to discuss:
Workshop Details
• DNM Level 1 - taught by Mike Reoch: March 12/13/14 in Birmingham, March 18/18/20 in Exeter.
• DNM Level 2 - taught by Rey Allen: June 4/5/6 in Birmingham, June 10/11/12 in Exeter.
What is DermoNeuroModulation?
Dermoneuromodulation (DNM) was founded by Diane Jacobs, a physiotherapist for over 40 years and a manual therapist for over 30. In the 1990's, Diane studied with David Butler (co-author with Lorimer Moseley of the hugely successful 'Explain Pain' manual for therapists and patients). Given the idea that she was less likely affecting tissue targets and more likely treating peripheral nerves, Diane started to read the evidence and investigate the anatomy & mechanism of the nervous system. Her attention was drawn in particular to cutaneous nerves, something that no manual therapy teacher had ever mentioned before. By 2005, Dianne was calling her work 'DermoNeuroModulation', later renamed to DermoNeuroModulating to refer to it as a verb. In Diane's own words:
"DermoNeuroModulating, or -tion, is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its container). It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient's physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change - while optional, it can also be optimal."
