Jesus urged his followers to ‘take up their cross’ and follow him, and spoke of ‘denying’ themselves. Is this a program of dismal puritanism, austerity, or even self-hatred? On the contrary, the writer to the Hebrews shows us that the way of Christ takes us beyond the cross to a bigger mission, vision and calling described as ‘Joy’! But what is the biblical idea of 'Joy', and how does it guide each of us towards our purpose and calling?
