American voters are being encouraged to endorse socialists and their agenda this Fall. It happens that, at this moment, several national experiments with applied socialism are bearing predictably bitter fruit. Notably, once-wealthy Venezuela has joined Zimbabwe as an economic basket-case, thanks to the redistribution of wealth enforced by political repression.
Another nation, South Africa, is now poised to join their ranks, probably with even bloodier consequences. Its government is expropriating without compensation the farms that have been highly productive and well-managed by white Afrikaners, entrusting them instead to impoverished blacks wholly unprepared to run them. The process is unleashing violence against the minority and imperils one of the continent’s most important breadbaskets.
President Trump is right to recognize that this train-wreck, like socialist travesties elsewhere, will not end well. Costs we can impose for going there may help avert it.
