A Strategy on Ukraine

On Saturday, Barack Obama had a tense ninety-minute call with his Russian counterpart. Mr. Obama warned Vladimir Putin against further acts of aggression in the Ukraine.

Putin has taken Obama’s measure, though. His contempt for our president must have intensified when told that the punishment for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would be our sitting out Putin’s next spectacle in Sochi – the upcoming multinational G-8 meeting.

Such a trivial penalty won’t deter a thug like Vladimir Putin from his ambition to reconstitute what Ronald Reagan famously called the “evil empire.” So President Obama should adopt the strategy Mr. Reagan used to destroy the last one: a comprehensive, multi-dimensional and highly effective plan called National Security Decision Directive 75.

It worked before to protect the Free World, and it’s surely needed now.
