This week Kadie chats with Dr. Paul Kanive, the president of the California White Shark Project. Paul has been studying white sharks since 2008, when he volunteered to assist with field operations on the Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) project. In 2009, he began his graduate studies, focusing on modeling and estimating white shark population parameters at Montana State University in Bozeman. After earning a Master’s degree in Fish and Wildlife Management in 2015, he continued his work on white shark population dynamics, earning a Doctorate degree in Fish and Wildlife Biology in 2020. Tune in to hear about the history of white shark monitoring efforts off the coast of California, some cool white shark facts, and why the California White Shark Project came into existence last year!
If you would like to get in touch with Paul you can reach him at californiawhitesharkproject@gmail.com. If you would like to learn more about the California White Shark Project, you can check out their website or Instagram @californiawhitesharkproject. You can contribute to California white shark monitoring efforts by donating directly, purchasing hoodies on their website, or you can buy artwork or stickers from Thomas David Ritter. 100% of the proceeds go towards white shark research costs.
