Yesterday, China returned an unmanned underwater mapping vehicle it had stolen last week with impunity – and without cost – from the United States Navy. Yesterday, China returned an unmanned underwater mapping vehicle it had stolen last week with impunity – and without cost – from the United States Navy. Presumably, in the intervening time, it has fully compromised whatever technology and data the drone contained.

The associated humiliation of our country may prove to be the greater cost of this incident, however. It fits a pattern of such diminishing of our country at the hands of America’s actual or potential enemies likely to be among the most damning legacies of the Obama presidency.

To name a few examples: The consequence-free hacking of our government, businesses and electoral campaigns by hostile powers. The PRC’s seizure and arming of islands dominating the South China Sea. The appalling Obamabomb nuclear deal with Iran accompanied by its hostage-taking of American civilians and sailors.

Some legacy: Enemies emboldened. Friends undermined. Our country diminished.
