Why the Divine Takes on Form

Why do we choose to project a form onto the formlessness of the Divine?  Often on a spiritual path, the student will have the Divine take on a form of their Ista Deva, a guru, a deity of some sort. This happens usually in the earlier stages of one's spiritual journey.
