On the eve of Republic Day in 2015, the Indian Prime Minister’s pin-striped suit drew more attention than the joint statement with then chief guest US president Barack Obama. Since Independence, Indian politicians even from the upper crust have dressed in crumpled khadi, if not sack-cloth and ashes. A Nehru or Gandhi, born in riches, dump their old style and luxuries, adopt khadi and become icons of humility.
