In our first ever DPW BookCast, we cover the first three stories of "The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian" collection written by Robert E. Howard. We start the episode off with a reading of the poem "Cimmeria" that kicks off the collection of stories.
After that, we talk a bit about the illustrations in the collection, the life and writing style of Robert E. Howard, and some of the overall things we enjoyed so far. Then we go into detail and discuss the three stories "The Phoenix on the Sword," "The Frost-Giant's Daughter," and "The God in the Bowl."
We end the episode with a discussion of where we feel Robert E. Howard's work and writing style falls among the great literary writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. We also go back into a familiar conversation on what makes something classic or fine literature and if the Conan stories should get such a grand distinction.
