Yesterday, President Trump signed into law the new National Defense Authorization Act. Among its many provisions were several that underscore a sea-change in U.S. security policy. Evidently, there is an emerging, bipartisan consensus that Communist China is a hostile power that must be countered in every battlespace.
The bill focuses on: assisting Taiwan, which is facing intensifying threats from the mainland; challenging China’s massive military build-up in the South China Sea and other strategic chokepoints; thwarting Beijing’s economic and information warfare, influence operations and espionage inside this country; and contending with Chinese efforts to dominate cyber and outer space.
Congress also declares that “long-term strategic competition with China is a principal priority for the United States…to protect and strengthen national security.” Amen.
