In this episode, I talk with Hannah Dimmick. The primary topic of the conversation was centered around RED-S, or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports, which was previously termed "The Female Athlete Triad." RED-S covers what happens when athletes (predominantly female athletes) consume too few Calories in comparison to what they expend, leading to a cascade of outcomes including, but not limited to, changes in menstrual cycle, reductions in bone density, increased risk of injury, chronic fatigue, reductions in athletic performance, and depression.
Hannah earned her undergraduate degree and Master's degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas. While there, she competed in cross country and track and field, specializing in the middle distances (800m and 1500m). She is currently pursuing her PhD. in Kinesiology with a specialization in wearable technology from the University of Calgary. She also wanted everyone to know that she can quote almost any episode of Brooklyn 99 and she recently survived a week where the highest temperature was -14F.
