The EU must do everything to avert a major humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan. That’s the warning from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

During her State of the EU address to the European Parliament this morning, Ms von der Leyen pledged an additional one hundred million euro in aid to Afghanistan.

She told MEPs, the EU stands by the Afghan people, including its women and children, prosecutors, journalists and human rights workers.
