This week Jamie focused on the account in Genesis 1 of the creation and unique calling of humankind. These passages make some profound claims that are absolutely central to some of the most important issues that face us in the 21st century. Primarily we considered the assertion that humans are made in the ‘image and likeness’ of God: What would this have meant to an ancient audience, and what might we infer regarding the status and purpose of human beings? Secondly, we looked at what might be implied by the mandate to ‘subdue’ and ‘rule’ the created world. Tragically, these phrases have been used to excuse environmental exploitation. However, this is totally at odds with the character and commandments of God as revealed though the rest of Genesis 1, which instead leads us to good news summed up as capacity, dignity, and responsibility.
