What we often think is altruism is nothing more than narcissism. Narcissism is how the media, and those in power, appeal to you and me— They appeal to our ego, our vanity. Why do you suppose so many fitness books and programs are sold every year? Or did you think most people’s New Year’s resolutions, about losing weight, were about health? People used to take pride in earning things— Now it seems as if they’re okay with someone simply giving them something as long as they end up with the desired result. America, at least in theory, was always based on meritocracy — You know, the American Dream of achieving and becoming whatever your heart desired through max effort and hard work? But today, it seems so different. To be perfectly honest, people are being conditioned to want and expect something for nothing.
