The C. Melita Webb Poetry and Life
Religion & Spirituality:Spirituality
Hello, and thank you for joining us for a few inspirational moments and loving conversations with C Melita Webb.
Today I share some fascinating genealogy basics and how I got hooked by the "Genealogy Bug" and family connections.

Many states didn’t keep birth, death, or marriage records at the county level until the early 1900's. Specific spellings of names and dates of birth were not considered important enough to enforce consistent spelling or record keeping. The reporting requirements changed once the federal government became involved and the social security act passed into law.
Similarly, most people were delivered at home by illiterate midwives, so no hospital or official records were completed. Documents were often not pursued until they were needed to enroll a child in school or if adults wanted to file for Social Security filings. So look for delayed birth certificates.
Apprenticeship was the name used by the courts who took children and assigned them a place to live where they were to be fed, clothed, cared for, and educated.
The book I spoke about was The Bondswoman’s Narrative.
