The death of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi last week has admirers of President Obama claiming it proves his success as Commander-in-Chief. At the very best such claims are premature. More likely in Libya and elsewhere in the Middle East, the United States will soon confront new and more dangerous tyrannies under the effective if not formal control of virulently anti-American, anti-Israel, and pro-Sharia Islamists.
Worse, the unraveling of the hoped for Arab Spring is not happening in isolation. For example, the imminent departure of U.S. forces from Iraq creates a vacuum of power likely to be filled by an ascended Iran.
And Turkey, although a NATO ally, is aggressively promoting an Islamist agenda that endangers Israel and threatens our interests. Such outcomes are bad enough, touting them as great successes for America is preposterous.
