If an enemy wants to really hurt America, how would they do it? Suicide bombs in our malls? Poisoning our food supply? One or more nuclear weapons destroying cities? Unleashing a deadly, perhaps bio-engineered virus, like the black plague on steroids?
These are frightening scenarios and would do a lot of damage.
But if someone really wants to devastate this country or – as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad like to say, bring about a world without America – one particular threat comes to mind: a high altitude electromagnetic pulse attack.
Such an EMP attack – caused by a nuclear weapon detonated outside the atmosphere high over the United States – would devastate the electrical grid. All infrastructures that rely on electricity would cease to function until the grid is repaired – which may take years.
By some estimates, within twelve months of a high-altitude EMP burst, nine out of ten Americans would be dead for want of food, water, heat, money, transportation, medical care and all the other things that make our society possible.
We can and must take steps now to shield our grid and infrastructure, our lives depend on it.
