We are witnessing in Greece the death of national sovereignty. Its prime minister says his people should have a chance to vote on a bailout that effectively surrenders control over their political and economic affairs to others, in exchange for a promised financial bail-out.
The rest of Europe just wants the mother of democracy to go down quietly, without a referendum. Leaders of the world’s top 20 economies can be expected to pile on in their meeting on the French Riviera today.
The whole affair should be a cautionary tale for Americans, too. We are not Greece, of course. But we better stop ceding control over our destiny to others like the Communist Chinese, foreign suppliers of energy or international financial organizations.
Our sovereignty is precious. We lose it at our peril.
