An Army general has been relieved of his command in Afghanistan. His offense? Speaking the truth about an unreliable and unworthy ally: that country’s President Hamid Karzai.
Major General Peter Fuller’s breaking point was Karzai’s declaration that, if there were a war between the United States and Pakistan, Afghanistan would side with Pakistan. The deputy commander for NATO training responded, “…You have got to be kidding me. We just gave you $11.6 billion and now you are telling me, ‘I don’t really care’?”
General Fuller’s criticism of Karzai as “erratic” may have been undiplomatic. But we must neither ignore nor preclude legitimate warnings from our troops. After all, they are bearing terrible costs to secure President Karzai’s government and protect us – even as they are being sold out by the Obama administration.
