Is America Retreating?

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Whether we admit it or not, America is seen to be in retreat around the world. The latest symptom is a dramatic reduction in our diplomatic presence in Iraq following the withdrawal of all U.S. forces there. At this rate, we may eventually abandon our hugely expensive new embassy in Baghdad. This comes as deep cuts in defense spending will mean a free-fall in the United States’ ability to protect its interests and allies. Vacuums of power are developing in strategically sensitive places. Should we care what happens as a result in far-flung areas like the Mideast, Latin America and Western Pacific? Unfortunately, our perceived weakness emboldens adversaries and can translate into threats to our commerce, people and security. In the past, it has led to war.
