America’s Nuclear Future

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has just issued a license for  the first new reactor-driven power plants since Three Mile Island.  It’s about time. The reactors’ design is fundamentally different than the aging ones we rely on today.  They are designed to fail-safe.  Even in the event the electricity goes off – as it notoriously did in Japan last year – the nuclear core can be cooled and safely shut down. There are always questions about nuclear power, including its cost and how to dispose of its radioactive waste.  With the introduction of a new generation of power plants, however, at least concerns about the safety of this technology can be substantially alleviated. Having a diversified and modern nuclear component to the nation’s energy portfolio is critical to our national security – and long overdue.
