The Future of the Chinese Communist Regime

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Today, the presumed future leader of Communist China will get what might be called the red-carpet treatment in Washington. To that end, Xi Jinping is being portrayed in a manner reminiscent of the make-overs given to Communist leaders of yesteryear. We are always told that they like things like American music, sports and scotch and that we can do business with them. A reality check is needed. If Xi actually makes it through the transition now underway – and he reportedly faces serious challenges from hardline anti-American factions in Beijing – it seems likely that he will be beholden to the king-making Chinese military. That will probably mean more money and latitude for the People’s Liberation Army to behave aggressively towards us. Totalitarian transitions are often tricky and a lousy time to gut U.S. defenses.
