When Barack Obama became President of the United States, he swore an oath to “preserve, protect and defend our Constitution.” Unfortunately, evidence has accumulated ever since that he feels no obligation to honor his commitment.
The latest and particularly ominous example came to light in congressional testimony last week by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. He told incredulous Senators that Mr. Obama might go to war in Syria if he gets international permission. And his administration might or might not inform Congress should he decide to do so.
The Constitution says only the legislature can declare war. Senator John Kerry lost his presidential campaign, in part, for declaring he would seek UN “permission” for U.S. military action.
Congress must insist that this President preserve, protect and defend, not flout, the U.S. Constitution.
