Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is in Afghanistan for a damage control mission following an American soldier’s murderous attack on civilians in two Afghan villages.
The real problem is not this incident, terrible as it was. That rampage simply compounds the harm done to our standing by other actions. By far, the most important of these is President Obama’s decision to bail out of Afghanistan by 2014.
As a result, everyone there now sees we are going to lose. Survival instincts dictate that they try to get right with the likely winner, namely the Taliban. That dynamic will make it far harder to leave in good order as late as 2014 and will cost a lot more allied lives during whatever time we stay on. It may make Secretary Panetta’s – and our troops’ – a mission impossible.
