As we learn more about the alleged perpetrator of a massacre of civilians in Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, an ominous question looms: Are we breaking the U.S. military?
At issue is not whether this crime should be excused due to Sgt. Bales’ four combat tours and several injuries. Nor is it to impugn the extraordinary men and women serving in uniform who every day overcome similar hardships.
If we expect to rely in the future on an all-volunteer military, however, as a nation we must reduce those hardships – and the sacrifice entailed in overcoming them. In today’s dangerous world, we need larger forces, properly equipped and confident that commitments made to them and their families will be honored. That’s not President Obama’s plan, and it needs to be fixed.
